Wild Weather

We recently just finished up reading some informational text on wild weather.  My students were FASCINATED by weather. 

Even now they often ask, “Ms. Tegeler, can you give us the weather report?” 

Of course I jump on my high-horse and share a detailed report, since I currently follow the weather so closely with hopes of a delay or even a day off! 

During our weather study, I say study but don’t an extended amount of time.  We currently use the Wonders Reading Program as a resource for texts and follow our county’s curriculum which utilizes those texts in addition to others.  My team and I not only read the texts suggested in our curriculum, but also Scholastic News articles, resources from Reading A-Z, and other online resources. 

To end our weather study we wanted to do an informational writing activity with a little twist and creativity.  We decided to have our kids do weather reports. 

And so came….

We watched and read some weather reports from local and national weather people.  This REALLY helped the kids get used to how the reports go and even some of the lingo.

A line from one of my students reports:

“Alright folks, you better buckle down and

have your fridge full. 

Your not moving for awhile.”

The kids had a few nights at home to dig up some interesting facts we hadn’t read about related to the type of storm they picked.  We gave them the options of a blizzard, tornado, or hurricane.

Once they revised and edited their own and a friend’s, it was time for the final copy! After printing this page, I enlarged it before copying and then copied it on 11” by 17” paper.  This makes it extra special in my kiddos eyes!

In the top box, students drew what the storm looks like in action and wrote a matching caption.  In the bottom box, students drew what the damage from the storm looks like and wrote a matching caption.  The box and circle in the bottom left was for additional information.  Some kids wrote additional interesting facts, safety tips, steps to prepare, etc.
