Time to Interact (Classifying & Mammals)

It is time for my 2nd Interactive Science Notebook post! 

Here are some pictures of student work from Day 1:

I am including resources for Days 2 and 3 of my Eco-Adventurers unit, which focuses on animals and habitats. 

Here is what our Table of Contents page looks like including the resources from the two days in this post.

Day 2- Classifying Animals

The focus on this day was for students to understand the difference between invertebrates and vertebrates, in order to classify living things into the two groups.

Students first glued this into their notebooks on the left side.

I gave them a few minutes to respond and then we shared.

 

We watched the BrainPop Jr. video on Classifying Animals.

I gave students the foldable shown below.  We read about each of the groups and then revisited the text for important information to complete the bottom half of each page.

When folded, the image below shows what the foldable will look like once they glue it on the right side of their notebooks.

As a final activity for the students to document their understanding, students classified animals into the two groups.  They created a t-chart in their notebooks on the left side.

Day 3- Characteristics of Mammals

The focus on this day is for students to be able to define and recognize the characteristics of mammals.

Students first will glue this into their notebooks on the left side.

I will give them a few minutes to respond and then we will share.

Students then will glue this in the right side of their notebooks. 

We will read and discuss together. 

Students will create a web using the blank organizer below. They will use the information in the article to help them.  Below the blank organizer is a completed organizer to show what I expect.

To demonstrate their new learning, students will write an acrostic poem using the word MAMMAL.  In the poem they must include the characteristics of mammals.
